Chronic Disease Management
Chronic diseases are the leading cause of illness, disability and death in Australia. As deaths from infectious diseases have reduced in the last hundred years, life expectancies have increased. As we age and our lifestyles change, we see a significant increase in chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes. These are all influenced by smoking, physical inactivity, poor nutrition and harmful use of alcohol. Preventative medicine (as described in an earlier section) is the key to reducing the incidence of these diseases, and very good management will reduce their consequences.
At Milton Village Medical all of the doctors are interested in and skilled at chronic disease management.
